A Động từ + at

laugh/smile AT...:
I look stupid with this haircut. Everybody will laugh at me.

aim/point (something) AT..., shoot/fire (a gun) AT... (=in the direction of)

Nhưng
phone/telephone somebody (không có giới từ):
Did you phone your father yesterday? (không nói 'phone to your father’)

invite (somebody) TO (a party/a wedding, v.v...):
They only invited a few people to their wedding.

C Một số động từ có thể được dùng với at hay to, với những nghĩa khác nhau. Lấy ví dụ:
shout AT somebody (when you are angry - khi bạn đang giận)
She got very angry and started shouting at me.
Cô ấy trở nên rất giận và bắt đầu la tôi.
shout TO somebody (so that they can hear you - để người khác có thể nghe thấy bạn):
She shouted to me from the other side of the street.

throw something AT somebody/something (in order to hit them - nhằm đụng người khác):
Somebody threw an egg at the minister.

Judy shouted “catch!” and threw the key to me from the window.

D Explain/describe/apologise
Ta nói: explain something (TO somebody):
Can you explain this word to me? (không nói 'explain me this word')
Bạn có thể giải nghĩa từ này cho tôi không?
Tương tự: explain (to somebody) that/what/how/why...?:
I explained to them what I wanted them to do. (không nói 'I explained them')

Với describe cũng vậy:

Để ý rằng ta nói apologise TO somebody (for...):

nice/kind/good/generous/polite/silly/stupid v.v... OF somebody (to do something):
Thank you. It was very nice/kind of you to help me.

It is stupid of her to go out without a coat in such cold weather.

sorry ABOUT something:

Nhưng ta thường nói sorry FOR doing something:
I’m sorry for shouting at you yesterday.
Tôi xin lỗi đã la bạn hôm qua.
Cũng có thể nói “I’m sorry I (did something)”:
I’m sorry I shouted at you yesterday.
Ta nói to feel/to be sorry FOR somebody:
I feel sorry for George. He has a lot of problems.
Tôi thấy tội cho George. Anh ấy đang gặp nhiều phiền phức.
