Unit 112. Although/through/even though. In spite of/despite

 

A          Xét tình huống sau:

 

Last year Jack and Jill spent their holidays by sea. It rained a lot but they enjoyed themselves.

 

Năm ngoái Jack và Jill đi nghỉ mát ở biển. Trời mưa nhiều nhưng họ rất thích thú.

 

Bạn có thể nói:

 

Although it rained a lot, they enjoyed themselves. (= It rained a lot but they...)

 

Mặc dù trời mưa nhiều nhưng họ vẫn rất vui thích. (= trời mưa nhiều nhưng họ...)

 

hoặc

 

In spite of  the rain, they enjoyed themselves.

 

Despite the rain, they enjoyed themselves.

 

B          Sau although ta dùng cấu trúc chủ ngữ + động từ.

 

Although it rained a lot, we enjoyed our holiday.

 

            Dù trời mưa luôn, chúng tôi vẫn rất vui trong kỳ nghỉ.

 

I didn’t get the job although I had all the necessary qualifications.

 

            Tôi không xin được công việc đó dù tôi có đủ năng lực.

 

Hãy so sánh ý nghĩa của although và because:

 

We went out although it was raining.

 

            Chúng tôi đã ra ngoài dù trời đang mưa.

 

We didn’t go out because it was raining.

 

            Chúng tôi đã không ra vì trời đang mưa.

 

C          Sau in spite of hay despite, ta dùng một danh từ, một đại từ (this/that/what .v.v.) hoặc -ing:

 

In spite of the rain,  we enjoyed our holiday.

 

            Bất kể trời mưa, chúng tôi vẫn vui trọn kỳ nghỉ.

 

I didn’t get the job in spite of having all the neessary qualifications.

 

            Tôi không kiếm được việc dẫu tôi có đủ năng lực.

 

She wasn’t well, but in spite of this she went to work.

 

            Cô ấy không được khỏe, nhưng dẫu vậy cô ấy vẫn đi làm.

 

In spite of what I said yesterday, I still love you.

 

            Bất chấp những gì hôm qua anh đã nói, anh vẫn yêu em.

 

Despite là tương đương in spite of. Để ý rằng ta nói in spite of nhưng lại nói despite (không có of):

 

She wasn’t well, but despite she went to work. (không nói 'despite of this')

 

Bạn có thể nói “in spite of the fact (that) ...” và “despite the fact(that)...”

 

I didn’t get the job in spite of the fact (that)/despite the fact (that) I had the necessary qualifications.

 

Hãy so sánh in spite of và because of:

 

We went out inspite of the rain. (hay ...despite the rain)

 

We didn't go out because of the rain.

 

D          So sánh although và in spite of/ despite:

 

Although the traffic was bad, I arrived on time.

 

            In spite of the traffic, I arrived on time.

 

            (không nói 'in spite of the traffic was bad')

 

            Mặc dù giao thông tồi tệ, tôi vẫn đến đúng giờ.

 

I couldn’t sleep although I was very tired. (không nói 'despite I was tired')

 

            I couldn’t sleep despite being very tired.

 

E          Nhiều khi ta nói though thay vì nói although:

 

I didn’t get the job though I had all the necessary qualifications.

 

Trong Anh ngữ đàm thoại ta thường để though ở cuối câu:

 

The house isn’t very nice. I like the garden though (= but I like the garden)

 

            Ngôi nhà không  đẹp lắm. Tuy nhiên tôi thích mảnh vườn.

 

I see him every day. I’ve never spoken to him though. (= but I've never spoken to him)

 

            Tôi trông thấy anh ta hàng ngày. Tuy vậy tôi chưa bao giờ nói chuyện với anh ta.

 

Even though (không phải riêng even) mang nghĩa mạnh hơn although:

 

Even though I was really tired, I couldn’t sleep. (không nói 'Even I was really tired...')

 

            Cho dẫu tôi thật sự mệt mỏi, tôi đã không thể ngủ được.
